Pre-Production Production blog - Week 3

Project Log - Week 3

I have learnt a lot about Narrative structures and devices. I have also learnt about differnet conventions for example opening credits and title cards etc... I have learnt that they play a huge part in actually creating the film and I no that if not done correctly then it can leave the audience feeling very confused about certain structures in the film. For example a narrative structure like Omniscient follows the lives of more than one particular character in a film and so it enables the audience to access more narrative events, However this can make the audience feel very confused as too might might be going on, it may be too much for the audience to handle. Another example is Non-Linear, this is when the story is not in chronological order and therefore can be confusing at times especially for a person watching it for the first time. Also other Narrative device such as flashbacks/forwards is a good technical device to use although if its not done correctly can be also confusing! I have also learnt that each narrative device plays differnent roles in making a film and for example if i used a linea narrative then decided to use a non-linea narrative the film would change immensly and so i have to be careful with the decisions i make and have to choose wisely.
This will help me immensely when it comes to creating my opening sequence as it has given me more information/research on many devices and how they may help me to create my film. Also it has given me some tips on what to add to my opening and what not to add in order for me to gain the best marks possible. I dont want to confuse the audience as i no if i add to many narrative devices many questions could be left un-answered at the end of my film so i would prefer to limit the amount and work hard on which ever narrative device i decide to use.
Personally I feel that I might want to use a Linear Narrative for my opening as I feel that its less confusing for the audience to understand, also I would like to use either Omniscient or Restricted Narrative, and possibly a Open Narrative to end with as I feel it will be more dramatic leaving it on a cliff-hanger.
