Pre-Production Production blog - Week 4

Week 4
I have learnt that target audience is extremely important for the making of a film. By having a target audience helps us reflect whether or not our film will reach a mainstream audience or a niche. Our film in particular will range from 16 - to - 20 year olds and we are aiming at a niche audience. Our film is aimed at the younger generation because they tend to be more involved in being pressurised into doing things such as drugs & alcohole in order to fit in. Also working class is the general social class involved in the making of our film.

The institutions involved in making British Social Realist films usually aim for a niche audience as they have a very low budget. This then effects the quality of the film and props involved and also the distribution. Not alot of marketing and advertising will have been done and so this will overall effect their target audience and so that is why they appeal to niche audiences. For example me and my partner were looking at the film 'Fish Tank'
Fish Tank was produced by companies such as BBC Films and UK Film Council and therefore had a very low budget. Their overall total budget couldnt of been anything over £1million. This is an extreme difference from a big Hollywood film such as Toy Story 3D which had the help from 'Pixar Animation Studios and Walt Disney Pictures'  This film would have made at least a couple of million to create, and then another couple of million to distribute and exhibit.
The reason companies such as BBC Films etc.. aim towards a niche audience is because they have low budget but also show things such as drugs, sex and violence which is the realities of life which some people dont like to see, however some do. Also real locations and sounds are used and this is made is seem more natual and give it a extremely good feel of verisimilitude.
This will inform my production into doing as many other British Social Realist companies do by using many of the same conventions in order to help it look more realistic. I also will make sure that my target audience are able to relate to my opening sequence at all times!
