Part 8 - Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Strengths:
Creativity-
  • The overall success of my preliminary task for the continuity editing exercise was the use of mine and my partner’s creativity, as we led the audience into believing that the girl wanted to desperately tell her mother something very important.
  • At this stage we created flash backs to show what the mother thought happened to her daughter for her to be so worried as to telling her(either she was pregnant or she had been attacked) This then created a false answer to the audience as we then revelled at the end that she had just broke the toilet chain.
  •  We wanted it to be comical but yet wanted it to be much dramatized and so that’s why i added the slow motion reaction at the end to make it funny.
Digital Technology-
  • As it was the first time using all the camera equipment me and my partner was a bit shy to begin with however we got the hand of it very quickly and began doing different shots like 'match on action' where we had the girl opening the door and entering the bathroom.
  • This was very successful as we got the transitions for the 'match on action' very tighta and it looked really believable and looked really good!
  • Also another match on actin shot we used was when the girl walked done a shot from the front of her and from the back of her and then mixed the two up to create two different shots.
Post production-
  • For post production i feel that the editing was very successful as we made sure all of our tranitions from one shot to the other was spot on as we didnt want any jump cuts etc...
  • Another success was that my evalutation was very detailed yet to the point and i think i did really well with it!
Weeknesses:
Digital Technology
  • The least successful for this was at one stage i used hand held as I shot a close up of Laura's eyes as she was crying. As it was my first time doing handheld i was a but shakey and so i decided to add an effect to cover it up so that it didnt look very obvious.
Post Production-
  • Personally i feel the least successful stage for this for our continuity exercise was as i added in different effects for example slow motion to go into a flash back a strange loud noise appeared interfering with the sound as the girl says "She's going to kill me" in order to change this we had to take the sound of the girl out and make the volume louder then re-add it back into our piece.
  •  It worked however it still left a slight muffled sound.
Research and Planning-
  • Least successful for this was that I dont feel personally that i made alot of detailed research as it was my very first task.
Improvements:
Digital Technology-
  • I feel that i have improved immensely on a lot of my mistakes during my preliminary task compared to my British Social Realism opening sequence task. This is because i was more comfortable and experienced with the entire camera equipment, and therefore i was able to learn and adapt more.
  • This therefore then enabled me to play around more with different shots and shot types for example i used a lot of 'point of view' shots as it went well with my genre/theme.
Creativity-
  • All the above links with my creativity as i was able to have more freedom with how and what i wanted my film to be about.
Post Production-
  • I improved on the use of Foley sound which we added in through our editing stages. We did this because we needed some sort of rattling key noise's to be happening in order to make Megan’s sister come and open the door.
  • Also we needed the sound of keys dropping to the floor as Megan does when she falls through the door. We did so by using a voice recorder/microphone and recorded the sounds our self and added them in and i think it worked extremely well as we learnt from our mistakes in our preliminary task and made sure it didn’t happen again!
  • Another thing we improved on was the use of background noises; we totally eliminated most background noises for most shots as we wanted to hear the music instead. However at stages we wanted to hear the music and the noises and so we just turned the adjusted the music on the volume and the same with the noises and we could hear both!
Research and Planning-
  • I improved immesely hear as I made sure I did enough planning and research in order for it to help me in the long run, and indeed I did.
  • All my planning and research was very detailed and very helpful as it enabled me to finally decide what i wanted my film to be about and what types of conventions i wanted to use for it!

Part 7 - What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Technology Used Chart- Part 7, Final Copy!

I think the most successful part for this technology was using the cameras for different shot types, also the microphone to create our foley sounds as i think it worked really well and you cant even tell we added it on at the end. Also the editing, using the imacs as i think out cuts and edits are very strong! They are very tight and shots such as 'match on action' really works well as it is well edited!

I think the least successful part for this technology was at the beginning of our piece when we started filming for the first time our shots were far too quick and so we had to go and reshoot all of them again which took up alot of our time as we had only about 1-2 days of filming left till it had to be completely finished!

From doing all this i have learnt an awful lot about the researching and the planning that goes into the making of a film, which is that the production part could not have been executed without doing all that hard work first. Reasons for this is because a lot of detailed research needs to have gone in before you can understand truly what British Social Realism films consist of, and also alot of planning needs to be done as you need to have a basic conventions of what genre/theme you want your film to be. Its a very difficult process the making of a film and we only produced the opening sequence which was tough, however I feel that me and my partner have done a very good job and have finished with a very good opening sequence along with detailed research and planning!!

Part 1 - Evaluation Of 'Megan's Story' Opening Sequence

Summary...

This year my aim was to make a new British Social Realist Film aimed at British 16-24 year olds. Me and my partner Laura had to produce the first two minutes of a film providing a clear sense of the graphical, editing and musical style that our film will be using. Within these two minutes we had to conform to the conventions of the Social Realist genre, and meet all audience expectations for this type of film.
The title of our opening sequence is 'Megan's Story', firstly this was a working title but as we got editing we began to really connect with it as we felt our opening sequence really is all about 'Megan's Story'. We feel that although it is very plain it is very informing and shows British Social Realism. It also connotes the films genre and tells us that Megan is the protagonist of the film as its all about her struggles. Also as Megan is an ordinary name we thought it would be perfect having it as the title as the whole film is based on 'Megan's Story' and it really gets the message across simple and effective! The themes this film explores are,
  • Death
  • Family and,
  • Alcholism
A brief summary for our opening sequence is that Megan has just recently lost her father and therefore is forced to move home. Megan had to move schools and make new friends. Unfortunately Megan began hanging around with the wrong type of crowd as they influenced her to start drinking. This led Megan into coming home most nights drunk in order to try and hide her vulnerability from her friends and family. When one night her sister who was very worried began letting Megan know how disappointed her father would be if he were still here.

^^^^^^^^Hear is a link to my treatment!!^^^^^^
Our film explore British social Realism in many ways as we have used all real locations, everyday casual clothes, and obvious props like for example.. the vodka bottle!

Written feedback about draft opening sequence

Written Feedback

Our class mates gave us some very positive feedback towards are first draft of our opening sequence. They said they liked our match on action shots. They also like our creativity of the shots we used for example the different angels we shot Stephanie (Megan), from behind her shoulder opening the cupboard and from inside the cupboard her taking the vodka bottle and slamming the door. A few things they said to improve on were that they didn't think we needed the shot from Steph's point of view when she was going to wipe her eye, that was because they think the shot after worked perfectly fine on its own without using the point of view shot for this moment. Me and my partner after this then decided to totally get rid that shot like our class mates said and it still worked really well. Another good comment they liked about our piece was that they really like how we done some of our point of view shots as they thought it enabled them as viewers to really step into the shoes of our main character 'Megan', but overall our draft has been a success with a few things we need to change.

1st attempt at making our opening sequence.

First few shots

Hear is a video of our first attempt at making our opening sequence.

Unfortunately the shots we done in this opening sequence were far too short. This was because we forgot our shooting script and so we did not know how long each shot had to be. This is our fault entirely and we are going to resolve this by starting again from scratch and working hard on creating a fantastic opening sequence. However i do feel that for our first attempt many of our ideas for the different shots for example 'the shot where the camera is in the cupboard' are very creative and good as it also gives off a nice light for 'Megan' in the back.

Pre-Production Analysis Of Feedback On My Animatic!

Feedback!

Hear are some examples of feedback i got from other students...
==> I like the way you used the arrows to indicate the movement, and the song compliments it aswell. You could also tell what is happening in the story. (Zarna Patel)
==> I like the way you have included the title "Megans Story" at the beginning of your animatic storyboad, telling the audeince whats happening and who it involves i.e. Megan. I like how you have included the arrows on your storyboard to show the audience of the camera movement. :) (Anmole Mughal)
==> I like the flow of your opening sequence, I like how you have used the title so we can understand what its about and how you included some of the credits. Some of the drawings were dificults to understand but overall i liked your animatic storyboard :) x (Anna Martin)
==>  I liked your animatic storyboard as it well showed the audience what is going to happen in your opening sequence. The music also fits well of the opening sequence. The arrows used where also a useful tool in understanding what was going on. (Gemma Doherty)
Improvements...
I have had alot of positive feedback from some of my class mates and so this indicates to me that not alot needs changing for my animatic. Also they have prasied a few things such as adding a title making it clear to the audience what the film is going to be about and whos in it. Also using arrows to indicate which way the camera is going to move. One thing one person said was that some of the drawings were hard to understand the reasons for that is because i uploaded it on to youtube and it became a bit faint but other than that everyone seemed to really like our idea!!

Pre-Production Final Treatment!

TREATMENT

Title- We have not yet decided on a secure name for our opening sequence and so to help get us going we have just decided to have the title as 'Megan's Story' in order to help set the scene and get the ball rolling and so it is a working title. Our title with be conventional for the British Social Realist genre and so it does conform to it. We want our title to widely appeal to our target audience, and to do so i think we will need to do some research on some other British Social Realist films to understand why the films have the title they have.

Target Audience- Our target audience will be from around 16-20 year old's and obviously anyone above 20 is enabled to watch it however we strongly want to encourage the film for the age level i have mentioned above. It will appeal to both male and female as we feel it can happen to any gender, also we have are going to include both sex's in our final piece. It will also appeal to the working class and upper class people. Our film will appeal to them as the characters we are going to use will be apart of that age and class (representation)

Technology- We want some parts of the film to be filmed from the main character 'Megan's' point of view, and to do so we will be using a steady cam. This gives off the effect of it being a documentary like feel to it, making it seem more natural, it also gives it a better sense of verisimilitude. Also by having a documentary feel to it makes it seem like we are following Megan throughout her life and following all the choices and decisions she makes which is our overall achievement of the film. This technology is very suitable as we get to see her journey through her eyes, also we dont want there to be any limitations to it.

Representations- Megan is our main character in our film, However we are going to have a protagonist which will be Megan's sister Kelsey who tries to help Megan do the right thing in life and we are going to have the antagonist's who are her new friends shes made in school Aaron and Stephanie. They are badly influencing her to do wrong and it quickly gets out of hand. It challenges the typical representations of groups in society as Megan comes from a rich background and she is forced to move and make new friends who come from working backgrounds.

Narrative- Brief summary of whole film...Megan her sister and her mum are forced to move home and Megan is forced to move school. Megan then get involved with the wrong people and begins doing bad things e.g. Drugs & Alcohole etc... and it eventually gets extremely bad that she begins to rely on them in order to live. She then looses her friends and doesnt want to turn to her family for help and so she is forced to deal with her crazy situation alone.
More detailed summary of opening sequence... Megan's dad dies and so her mum cannot afford to live in their current house as it is too expensive and so they are forced to move to a much smaller house in a new area. Not only this but Megan also has to moves school and has to make new friends. After all whats happened Megan turns very angry and upset and begins getting into trouble and up to no good when she finally makes her new friends, unfortunatly she makes friends with the wrong crowd. She gets into drugs and alcohole and is forced to cope with her addiction alone.
Conventions- Going to create a sound track to suit particular moods within the film. Also going to have introduction to location (Mise-en-scene)

Conventions- Mise-en-scene - We will film a nice big house from Megan's point of view then as she turns around film a shabby or less big/nice house. Also will then film the school from her point of view with differnent groups of teenagers surrounding it to show differnet classes to her mixing together.

Style and Iconography- We will use many close ups and longshots and establishing shots in particular to show emtion and surroundings. This will make it more active and dynamic which is the effect we want to give off, we want Megan's life to seem abit wild as she turns angry once she loose's her dad. The costumes for our film will be casual everyday wear to fit in with the social class. Also we will be creating our own music to fit our film.

Institution- We are making this film for film4 and so we have a very low budget. This will effect the distribution of the film as it wont have enough money for advertisement and marketing.
We particularly want our film to be for home exhibition for channel 4, and on DVD's. This is because we feel it will get more viewers and will make more money as alot of people prefer to watch films in the confort of their own home. Also this way i feel it will conform to being a British Social Realist film as it will be exhibited on a channel which shows mainly them type of films.

Pre-Production Analysis Of Feedback On My Draft Treatment

Feedback

To help me with my draft treatment ive had a few of my class mates give me feedback for my draft treatment so i am therefore enabled to make any necessary changes or improvements to some specific elements of my treatment. Hear are two examples of feedback i got given in order for me to make improvements.

Examples:
  • I really like the idea of how your narrative is based on Megan's view point, as it deals with her daily problems and situations she faces in living a total different area. I also think the idea of different representations you have used. Theres a couple of elements you need to improve on what kind of music you are going to use and how it relates to the genre. Also i think you need to add more detail on the kind of themes in your film and how it relates to the genre.
Overall a good treatment, wish you the best of luck.
[That was from Melissa Sacco]
  • I like how you have used the main character to relate well to the target audience, i think how you have done well to explain how you are going to show the situations she is in. I think if you had a fixed title then we could have more of an idea for the film and i think you could also add some more information on the conventions part. Overall i though this was a really good treatment.
[That was from Anna Martin]

They seem to really like our overall idea for our opening sequence and the situation that we have panned out for our main character. Also they have commented on how we have based many of our shots from Megan's view point which makes it different and interesting as the audience will get a better insite from the characters point of view.
Things they think we need to improve on our more detail on the types of themes we are having.
Also having a fixed title and music for our film.

The changes we will make are: When we finally think of a fixed title I feel it will give the audience a more better idea of our film and things such as genre and themes, so untill then we will have to keep working hard on thinking of an amazing final title for our final piece. Also with the music we are thinking of having one of our friends singing one of their songs. Reasons for this are that it gives the film more British Social Realism. Also makes it more natual and will be relating to the life of Megan.

Pre-Production One Page Draft Treatment!

25 word premisis:
When Megan moves to a new school and makes new friends, nobody could've imagined the trouble she was about to get in to.

Target Audience:
  • Our target audience ranges from 16 to 20 year olds. This is because all of the characters in the film are around that age group and so it only felt right that we target the audience to suit the characters in the film.
  • Ethnicity wise, we are aiming it at any as our film does consist of different backgrounds.
  • The social class is aimed at upper-class and middle-class due to the social class of the characters in our film.
  • It appealing towards both male and females as we have a range of genders in our film.

Outlining the storyline:
  • a teenager called Megan who had just recently lost her father. This then resulted in them having to move house as her mother unfortunatly was unable to afford their big upper-class house/lifestyle.
  • This then ment that Megan had to also move school and this involved making new friends.
  • Unfortunatly Megan got involved with the wrong kind of friends Aaron and Stephanie, they influenced her to begin drinking and and doing drugs to try and cure the pain from the loss of her father.
  • Also from the loss of her father she became very angry and upset and so she began pushing everyone further and further away from her especially her older sister Kelsey who only wanted to help her but just didnt know how.
  • And unfortunatly it gets worse from then on out...

Pre-Production Opening Institutional Credits

I have been looking through the opening sequence 'The Shining', I then created a time line to show when exactly the opening credits and title appeared. I also added a time line for when the music started and stopped for the opening.

The Shining contact sheet

The Shining

I found out from this opening sequence that the credits and title did not appear until half way through the actual opening sequence at around about 1.05 seconds into the piece. Also I was only doing my time line up to 2 minutes and so I made a note on the bottom of my times line some of the institutional credits added after 2 minutes. I did not know what it meant by the term 'screen play' and so I looked on google in order to research it and found out that it means the script for a movie, including descriptions of scenes and some camera directions. I also looked up what it meant by the term executive producer just to be clear and so I found out that it means a producer who is not involved in any technical aspects of the film making or music process, but who is still responsible for the overall production. Typically an executive producer handles business and legal issues.

Pre-Production Production blog - Week 4

Week 4
I have learnt that target audience is extremely important for the making of a film. By having a target audience helps us reflect whether or not our film will reach a mainstream audience or a niche. Our film in particular will range from 16 - to - 20 year olds and we are aiming at a niche audience. Our film is aimed at the younger generation because they tend to be more involved in being pressurised into doing things such as drugs & alcohole in order to fit in. Also working class is the general social class involved in the making of our film.

The institutions involved in making British Social Realist films usually aim for a niche audience as they have a very low budget. This then effects the quality of the film and props involved and also the distribution. Not alot of marketing and advertising will have been done and so this will overall effect their target audience and so that is why they appeal to niche audiences. For example me and my partner were looking at the film 'Fish Tank'
Fish Tank was produced by companies such as BBC Films and UK Film Council and therefore had a very low budget. Their overall total budget couldnt of been anything over £1million. This is an extreme difference from a big Hollywood film such as Toy Story 3D which had the help from 'Pixar Animation Studios and Walt Disney Pictures'  This film would have made at least a couple of million to create, and then another couple of million to distribute and exhibit.
The reason companies such as BBC Films etc.. aim towards a niche audience is because they have low budget but also show things such as drugs, sex and violence which is the realities of life which some people dont like to see, however some do. Also real locations and sounds are used and this is made is seem more natual and give it a extremely good feel of verisimilitude.
This will inform my production into doing as many other British Social Realist companies do by using many of the same conventions in order to help it look more realistic. I also will make sure that my target audience are able to relate to my opening sequence at all times!

Pre-Production Production blog - Week 3

Project Log - Week 3

I have learnt a lot about Narrative structures and devices. I have also learnt about differnet conventions for example opening credits and title cards etc... I have learnt that they play a huge part in actually creating the film and I no that if not done correctly then it can leave the audience feeling very confused about certain structures in the film. For example a narrative structure like Omniscient follows the lives of more than one particular character in a film and so it enables the audience to access more narrative events, However this can make the audience feel very confused as too might might be going on, it may be too much for the audience to handle. Another example is Non-Linear, this is when the story is not in chronological order and therefore can be confusing at times especially for a person watching it for the first time. Also other Narrative device such as flashbacks/forwards is a good technical device to use although if its not done correctly can be also confusing! I have also learnt that each narrative device plays differnent roles in making a film and for example if i used a linea narrative then decided to use a non-linea narrative the film would change immensly and so i have to be careful with the decisions i make and have to choose wisely.
This will help me immensely when it comes to creating my opening sequence as it has given me more information/research on many devices and how they may help me to create my film. Also it has given me some tips on what to add to my opening and what not to add in order for me to gain the best marks possible. I dont want to confuse the audience as i no if i add to many narrative devices many questions could be left un-answered at the end of my film so i would prefer to limit the amount and work hard on which ever narrative device i decide to use.
Personally I feel that I might want to use a Linear Narrative for my opening as I feel that its less confusing for the audience to understand, also I would like to use either Omniscient or Restricted Narrative, and possibly a Open Narrative to end with as I feel it will be more dramatic leaving it on a cliff-hanger.

Pre-Production Production blog - week 2

Project log - week 2

Throughout this week I have been learning about social realist codes and conventions in relation to audiences. I feel that I have learnt an awful lot which will help me immensly in how and what I am going to decide to use in my very own British social realist opening sequence/film. We learnt about many conventions such as 'comany logo', 'cast and crew' and 'title card'. Many films usually stick to one type of theme to use in their film, but sometimes more than one film can be just as successful. I feel that I am going to use a few different conventions in my final piece hoping to have the audience drawn in to my film making them want to watch more, I also want them to try and work out what the rest of my film is going to be about MAKING them want to see more. I found 'Fish Tank' and 'Kidulthood' particularly influencing as they really do conform to the term 'British social realism'. I feel that they both stick with some of the same themes however they are both different. I really liked both of these films as i feel they portray social realism really good and they both seem like they are aimed at a young type of audience which I hopefully will achieve later on too.

I have learnt from viewing and assessing past students work that a detailed, descriptive, colourful piece fo work with diagrams helps to pick up maximum marks from the mark scheme.
Hear is one students detailed diagram for one of his tasks.
Part Seven

Also alot of detailed and well researched information paid off in enabling students to get the highest mark, for example I feel that Jamie Chandler was one candidate that really worked hard and put alot of detail and intense research into his project!
And hear is his blog - http://jbchandler1.blogspot.com/

This will inform my production as I now know the standards I am supposed to work towards and possibly beyond. Also it will encourage me to put alot more detail into my producion enabling me to gain the best possible marks.

During this project I will try to avoid unessasary research, also I will try to put the most detailed information i can possibly find into my work. And alot of attention to research will be done and will try to compose a well written detailed piece!

Pre-Production Evaluating past students work!

Evaluating past studants work!

Student one - 1st blog
Planning and Research:
Strengths-
Had a clear, detailed planning diagram. Good explanations as to why he picked certain things such as the name of his thriller 'Reloaded'. He also had some good research on the 20th Century Fox big mainstream Hollywood company and why he used them for some things.
Weeknesses-
Could have had a more fun, colourful layout design to his planning/research making it more exciting to want to read.
(Level 3 - 15/20)

Construcion:
Strenghts-
The music worked well as it kept to the whole idea/theme of his film 'Thriller'.  The first person perspective of when someone is in the bin was extremely good as it gave us the feel that something was indeed in the bin, and it showed us it from their point of view. This made me watching it want to go ahead and watch more.
Weeknesses-
The opening titles were far too long, i just wanted it to start! The sound was extremely loud especially the scene where the man was putting rubbish in the bin!
(Level 2 - 30/60)

Evaluation:
Strenghts-
Good, simple, clear reasons for what he thought his strengths and weeknesses were.
Weeknesses-
Could have got some advice on what other people thought of his final piece in order to give him some strengths and weeknesses!
(Level 2 - 9/20)
Student two- 2nd blog
Planning and research:
Strengths -
This student has made extremely good use of his attention to detail on researching for his film. He has very good detailed resons to why he researched what he did-extremely detailed.
Weeknesses-
Could have had some explanations as to how he made some decisions for his film.
(Level 4 - 17/20)

Construction:
Strengths -
The flickers of the flash backs were very clever and creative. It was easily understandable and i understood exactly what was going on throughout i was not lost or confused at all. The close-ups to his face was good because it enabled us to see his facial expressions. It helped us as an audience see that something had previously happened.
Weeknesses -
He could have used some darker/duller lighting to stick with his theme of a thriller.
(Level 4 - 56/60)

Evaluation:
Strengths -
Clear, decise, reasons for improving his piece. Various ways of posting many of his evaluations on to his blog. Very detailed and descriptive.
Weeknesses -
This student has wrote a very large amount, but has made accurate and clear decisions, the only weekness i could suggest might be that he has wrote an awful lot.
(Level 4 - 18/20)
